A wonderfully tranquil scene in Wansford as three bikers walk up from the old bridge towards the junction with the Old Leicester Road. In these days, what was in effect the junction of the A1 and A47 was already considered busy enough to demand an RAC “scout” (standing centre) to control the traffic.
In the foreground right is the Old Mermaid Inn that was soon to be demolished in order to improve the road junction as road traffic rapidly increased in volume. Disgruntled locals were placated by the promise of a New Mermaid Inn at the top of the hill on the new A47 Wansford bypass !
