New England was very much Peterborough’s railway community with the big GNR works opening in 1853. Shortly afterwards, the company built 225 back-to-back terraced houses for its workers on Lincoln Road which became known locally as “The Barracks”.
To provide education for the families of their workers, GNR established its own local school in 1864.
Sadly, much of the frontage of the school is now hidden by more modern and less appealing buildings but a short trip up the adjacent York Road will offer more interesting views with much of the original school signage still in place.
