Prototype Deltic at Peterborough North

Prototype “Deltic” #DP1 at Peterborough North Station in 1959. Built in 1955, the demonstrator engine proved its capabilities such that 22 similar locomotives were ordered by British Rail in 1959 for use on the East Coast Main Line. DP1 finished working in 1961 after a major oil leak was rendered too costly to fix but survives today at the National Railway Museum in York.
